As a loyal reader of Manolo the Shoe Blog (and Manolo for the Big Girl), I can recognize a good pair of shoes pretty fact. It's true that the quality of your shoes often equates to your comfort level, but it's not always easy (or possible) to spend over $50 for shoes-- especially right now! When you need a new pair and you need to spend as little as possible, here's what you can do to make your feet happier. As you know, your general health and well-being can be tied directly to your feet.

Let's make them happy!

Pressure pads are perfect for heel and ball-of-foot comfort. Soft, gel-filled ones can make up for thinner insoles and can be replaced easily when they wear down. Since there are so many different kinds geared towards heel wearers now, you can take your pick at nearly any drugstore.

A thin coat of Vaseline can be smoothed onto the back of your heel to prevent chafing. I'm not the type of person who thinks "Vaseline is for everything," but it's a quick fix that never fails. Plus, expensive shoes can still hurt your feel, and you probably don't want those to come into contact with Vaseline! Not recommended for suede, moleskin, or light-colored fabric shoes and heels.

Be smart about heel sizes. You might live in 4" heels, but when you are spending $20 or less, consider reducing heel size 50% or more. Plus, you won't risk that dreaded "shoe heel bend" that occurs with cheaper heels.

Buy the right fabrics. Look for heels or flats-- no matter what price point you require-- in natural fabrics. Unlike in manmade fabrics, your feet will be able breathe and a bacteria and fungal-friendly environment will be discouraged. In addition, foot odor will not be as big of a problem when you go natural.

Don't be afraid of unusual colors. Many people say that cheap shoes are best kept dark, and for the most part, I agree. Electric-blue sales rack kicks aren't the way to go, but I believe that a splash of fresh color is an essential seasonal selection. A little purple, red or pink never hurt anyone, and you should trust your best judgment when it comes to looks that work.
