Plus-Size Style Tips

1. Figure flattering doesn't need to be tight. One common misconception is that because some styles need a closer fit to look good, plus-size women have to content with awkward fits that aren't necessarily the most comfortable. Even trying one size smaller in a few basics will make a big difference if you are a comfort junkie!

2. Items with a high-gloss shine work only in heavyweight fabrics. Satin can be intimidating for a woman of size, but it doesn't have to be structured and full of seams to look good. Soft, floaty satin glides around lumps and bumps, and can be way more forgiving than you might imagine.

3. Border-printed styles add professionalism to casual looks. Are you craving a simple, no-nonsense tee? A perfect way to work that into your work wardrobe is to choose one with a strong print in one confined area. A border print in stripes or solids creates a unifying effect, and a strong one at that.

4. High heels can be helpful for plus-size women if they have the right balance and heel thickness. Silhouettes offers heels with a plus-friendly look, and that makes us smile from ear-to-ear. Choose heels with heavier, stronger heels-- not stilettos-- to keep your weight comfortably distributed. One of my favorite shoe brands that does this successfully is Jessica Bennet at Silhouettes.

5. Undergarments will make or break your style. You don't need a girdle, but a slimming tank with a special stretchy panel or a push-up bra will do wonders. Try something from Hips & Curves, one of my favorite plus-size retailers, for lots of size-sensitive selections that are very sexy indeed.

6. Plus-size accessories will make you feel more comfortable. Cuff bracelets and choker necklaces become close to impossible to fit when you're shopping at an "average" store. Evans London offers sized pieces that fit well and are very trend-conscious.

7. Some fabrics are better suited for plus-size bodies. Cotton is a great choice for larger frames, so step away from the polyester and stretch and start working on a "new you" draped in forgiving fabrics!
