How To Get The Best Deal From Old Navy

I'm going to be 100%, brutally honest with you: I never shop at Old Navy and pay full price. Well, that might not be so amazing considering that I'm a deal maven extrordinaire, but I've been discovering new ways to save at this shop, and it's incredible! Never pay full-price at Old Navy again with these tips, unless you find a must-have something that you can't wait to have go on sale.

Here's what I do to save some serious cash at Old Navy:

1. It's important to go to their homepage and click on the banner that asks if you'd like email updates. After subscribing to the updates, you will receive valuable coupon codes that are some of the best you'll get out there. For example, you'll get notices about free shipping (invaluable in the thrifty shopper's world, as well as percentage-off savings that are stackable with other offers.

2. Don't be afraid to experiment with offers and stack them on the Old Navy website when it asks for coupon codes. In fact, I have even had luck stacking double "percentage off" coupons to save even more. For example, you can appy a 20% off coupon, then a free shipping deal, and then another 10% off coupon for additional savings. I just did this deal last week successfully, with one coupon I found on Coupon Winner and two I received from the above-mentioned newsletter deals.

3. Be clever when it comes to returns. Sometimes it pays to consider your options: there was an amazing free shipping / 20% off one-day only sale at Old Navy recently. Instead of stressing about getting my return sent out, I went to the store with my items to return and received an instant credit to my debit card. (By the way, there was a sligh bit of hassle at the store because I did not include the plastic packing bags.)

After making my return, I drove home and used my free shipping coupon, 20%, and additional 10% off coupons to make a pruchase of the items I would have been exchanging for. That way, I was not charged for "Returns Shipping" from Old Navy, and I was able to find the pieces I wanted on sale, without having to wait for the exchange to do through via mail or for my account to be credited.

*Note 1: Some items are return-by-mail only, but you can easily check that out on your packing slip or by accessing your order online through the link transmitted to you after purchasing over the internet.

*Note 2: Some deals are significantly better than others. I did not have to spend a minimum on the coupons I used, and these are ideal. Be wary of feeling forced to spend

4. Try your best to shop in Old Navy's clearance section, because the above-mentioned steals and deals work on both discounted and full-price items. While it's a little hard when you find the perfect item full-priced, clearance had such a variety that I was able to select all that I needed (layering tank tops in 100% silk, sleep shorts) for less.

5. Don't wait until the last second to use your coupon! Old Navy has experienced several outages recently, and that will make the site unavailable for you to use your (amazing) coupons. Consider purchasing in the morning on the day of sale.

Wondering what I bought?

Tip: Brooks Brothers Sells Women's Stuff, Too

I spend enough time shopping for men's clothes (both professionally and for my husband), but I've never really thought about Brooks Brothers for women. It's more of a "man" shop in my mind, which is great when I'm shopping for men, but not so advantageous when I'm actually getting stuff for myself. Feeling adventurous, I took to Brooks to see what they offer for the other side.

Answer: a lot!

Chiffon Pleat Skirt
Chiffon pleats are an all-around favorite of mine, because they work for summertime (to match with more black, especially) and in winter with cool textures like wool and bulky cotton. Even though it might look super prim on Brooks Brothers' website, I can assure you that it does not have to be. Try chiffon with knee-high boots for extra warmth when temps drop.
Luxury Silk Pajamas
You just feel like a lady when you're wearing silk pajamas! These gorgeous pajamas feature a sophisticated pattern on an even more sophisticated ground of lovely, sumptuous silk. I recommend these to any woman who is looking to build up her trousseau! Brooks Brothers has lots of other colors and styles if you prefer.
Calfskin_flats
Shiny, leather, and adorned with a pretty little engraved plate, these shoes are one of my top planned buys of the season. A stacked heel is basic enough to wear every day, but this pair has a shiny touch that can catapult them into another more stylish category.
Lace-Up Riding
Anyone want to buy me a present? Just kidding. Well, sort of. These riding boots are well-shaped, with an interesting lace-up detail that does not reach all the way up. Instead, these cool shoes hit up to the knee with a calfskin shaft, and are fun and easy to wear when you need something with a few additional design details. Made in Italy-- of course!
Wool Solid Dress
This dress is a classic, and can be dressed up (or down) in a variety of ways. Loop a few strands of pearls around your neck to push the classic envelope, or keep things exciting with textured tights a peep-toe booties with a ribbon tie. No matter what you choose, one thing is pretty certain: this dress will keep coming back to be styled. . . again and again! This is a good wardrobe investment piece.
Wool Twill Trench Coat
Every woman needs a trench coat, and a black coat. Why not kill two birds with one stone? This item has the potential to become a major player in your wardrobe, and you'll look smashing every time you slip this on.

Three Amazing Designers: Brian Reyes, Sari Gueron, and Peter Som

I have discovered three amazing designers over at ShopBop, and I know that you'll be into them as soon as you check out these cool items. From nice sunny yellow to soft sweaters, these pieces are perfect for any time of the year! There's something about the silhouettes that really grabbed me.

SARI GUERON

Sari Gueron Shirt with Cross Stitch

Cross stitch details in a beautiful mustard yellow is a perfect look with denim. Lined in 100% silk with a silk/cotton outer, this is a sumptuous piece that just about everyone will adore. Have you ever seen a shirt that's so relaxed and sweet? I'm in love.

Sari Gueron Cardigan Sweater
I'm tempted to wear this sweater with the above top. Plush cashmere isn't exactly a top summer piece, but if you buy it now. . . you'll have a beautiful piece for fall. Contrast rib trim along the sleeves and pockets add a great fit.
Peter Som Lace Tank
This romantic tee would look gorgeous for a New Year's bash, a cocktail party, or a little slinky get-together where you need to wear separates just in case. If you're nervous about what you'll be wearing and you don't want to overdress, this is a great tank to wear.
Peter Som Loop Buckle Belt
What a sexy belt. It's wide and awesome, and it even features a logo bit that runs along the metal clasp. It's 2.75 inches thick, which might seem a little thick, but I guarantee it's a great addition to your wardrobe. Imagine it with a slinky jersey dress, a neutral tunic, or a super slinky turtleneck.
Brian Reyes Cami Dress
Lustrous lame is a great fabric for any dress-- why haven't I scooped it up before? This dress is like a beautiful watercolor illustration, with swirling blues and purples playing alongside the hem of this masterpiece. I'd wear it with strappy metallic heels (very understated ones) and a little clutch.
Brian Reyes Drop V Dress
Perhaps my most unusual choice, this dress has a fantastic shape that's very haute couture. If you can't afford the real cost of custom-made (and, um, who can?), this dress has been slashed 50%. Yes, you read that right! It's currently $595, and that's a great deal in comparison. Do I smell an "investment piece"?

Funky Looks to Turn Over a New Leaf

Bright looks can really give you a good boost to switch your whole "thing" for a camouflage appeal. Since my favorite color is brown, I know all about that-- it can take me several attempts just to try out something like purple or pink, especially for more professional looks. That being said, it can be a true surprise when the girl who likes to wear dark colors switches it up for the office or a party. You can get that extra ounce of attention you need to make an impression at a meeting or special event.

There are also the casual times, and that's what I'd like to focus on today. Perhaps you have a wardrobe of "investment" suits and blazers that you have carefully edited to fit your work duties. Let's go for rainbow brights for the weekend, then, just to loosen things up!

American Apparel Tank
(American Apparel Tank, $15.00) This American Apparel tank top is available in a bunch of different colors, and it features a cool silhouette to go along with it. If you have a slightly more developed upper body, this tank is perfect because it dips quite low. If you head on over to American Apparel, you'll find plenty more tops in similar styles for your perusal.
RSAPHTC Opaque Two Color Pantyhose
(RSAPHTC Opaque Two Color Pantyhose, $16.00) Wheeee! Could these be any funkier? While I know that some of the most daring fashionistas will expose these with shorts or hot pants, I'd love to see them with a cool sparkly shirt and t-strap, vintage-inspired shoes. Again, if you're not crazy about this color combo, American Apparel offers so much more.
WWF Koala Knit Dress
(WWF Koala Knit Dress, $39.50) Tee dresses are an easy option for weekend style. If you need a look that's truly worry-free, a graphic print tee is your best answer. Make it a dress and you're scot-free. The best places to find these particular items is the junior's section online, from Delias to Forever21 to Wet Seal. You can also find them in XL to conquer the slightly smaller sizing.

Tip: Try out your t-shirt dress with a belt for shape.

Abbey Dress

(Abbey Dress, $39.50)
Sweet and refined, this is the perfect dress for those with slightly more conservative tastes, but who want to try the look out. Slip into a sweet dress with details around the waist to attract the eye around your best feature. This particular featured dress would look great on someone who has a smaller upper body to show off.

Shady Times Ring in Gold

(Shady Times Ring in Gold, $17.00)
A little bit of bling never hurt anyone, and it can dress up any outfit affordably-- bright or not. I'm fascinated with its kitchiness and its fun factor, and you never get too old for that. Slip this on when you're wearing your best black tube top or LBD.

The Shopper Bag in Katbots

(The Shopper Bag in Katbots, $22.00)
Tee, hee-- what a cool tote. If you're the type who's always lugging around shopping bags on the weekend to top kid's things and the rest, you'll be happy to know that this will make you look so much more stylish. Smile when you sling it over your shoulder, 'cause you'll be looking ultra cool and very stylish, too.

French Connection Babydoll Sleeveless Top

(French Connection Babydoll Sleeveless Top, $98.00)
Bright but not as young for the more mature shopper. I adore this piece, and I would wear it in a second. . . then again, I often feel like this when I shop at Macy's. This is a great option for women who want something with a little kick that they can still wear everywhere.

Do you have a favorite bright piece?

Dress Like a Celebrity for Less

Choose Their Brands, But Be Smart

Kitson Tote

(Kitson Tote)
Instead of buying the "mainstays" of a celebrity-designed line, such as jeans or jackets, look for cut and appealing pieces that show off the brand without costing you too much at all. It's the "Louis Vuitton Keychain" idea: adding a special something to accessories collection can add a pinch of celebrity appeal.

Aim for Diffusion Lines

Mia_psfk

Do you just love some brands that celebrities deck themselves out in, but there's no way that you can afford the looks-- or have anywhere to show the pieces off? A diffusion line styled by a notable designer like Karl Lagerfeld's work in the past for H&M saved you a ton, but gets you that celebrity look you're pining after. While celebs can buy Lagerfeld's original pieces, yours will look equally as effortless.

You can steal singer M.I.A.'s style soon! It's bright, but it's fun!

Tip: Diffusion lines are a great way to add casual yet stylish looks into your repertoire. They're usually less "fussy" and more clean.

Shoes Can Make the Difference

Steve Madden Bucks Black Patent

(Steve Madden Bucks Black Patent)
Play the lookalike game if you're feeling the pressure. Let's say that all your favorite celebs, from Lauren Conrad on The Hills to Angelina Jolie, wear Louboutins, and there's just no way that you can afford this. Instead of stressing and buying 100% knockoffs, aim for "inspired" looks like Steve Madden shoes that also feature characteristic pump silhouettes.

Don't Count Out the Makeup

Kat Von D Painted Love Lippieero

(Kat Von D Painted Love Lippie)
Yes, I know we're talkign about clothes-- but don't underestimate makeup's power to add "pop" to your look and leave you looking much more similar to your top celebs. If Dita Von Teese is your inspiration, then red lipstick is certainly de rigeur, but if you adore Gwyneth Paltrow, long, straight (and preferably blonde) locks are the order of the day.

Tip: Kat von D has an amazing line through Sephora here: all you need to do is don a rocker tee and jeans for the full effect!

Tips for Frugal Shopping

Feeling the crunch? Don't worry. I've gathered up some of my very favorite budget shopping tips for you to use and still get a chance to kit out your wardrobe. Even if you don't shop on a budget, applying these techniques just saves more money to buy more things. . . and that's never bad. Shopping smart is always great.

Switch some regular purchases to online selections.

Consider buying some of your office supplies online, for example, instead of picking them up at the usual shops. You can save 15% off of your purchases over a certain amount, and you can also score free shipping. Forget having to wait in line, and spending money on gas driving to the store.

Jot down your best deals.

Do you find that some shops are better for certain things? Make a list of where you score the best deals to avoid wasting time hunting online every time. For example, my personal list reminds me to look for books over at eBay as well as Amazon-- and to avoid Barnes and Nobles' sometimes more expensive shipping costs. Always keep that in mind as well- shipping costs can really affect what you consider to be the best deal.

Ask around.

I have a very frugal friend who knows who to maximize her savings. When I really think that I can't save any more, I double-check with her: she tells me exactly how to save more. If you have a friend who could compete with Amy Dacyczyn's Tightwad Gazette lifestyle, you can always learn a thing or two. Silently observe them if you don't want to ask for advice, and you're sure to discover new saving techniques that way, too.

Start "recycling."

If you are an avid eBay shopper, try to keep things in rotation. Instead of having a mountainous pile of "to donate" items, when you buy something on eBay, put something on sale of a comparable value. It's a great way to keep costs down, keep yourself more organized, and simultaneously reward yourself for it.

Only buy in bulk when you need to.

This tip applies for my grocery purchases, but it can also apply to family supplies and household items. If you are on a strict budget, consider buying regular-sized packages and seeing how your usage of the product changes. The psychology regarding your well-stocked items can be amazing, because when you feel like you have less, you'll probably use less. I do this with my food to eat less as well, but you need to shop for the deepest discounts to save on a comparable level with some items purchased in bulk.

Do you have any saver tips?

New Site Shopping Tips

I haven't been to eModa in a long time, and I thought I would check it out to see how things are going over there! To be honest, it's been long enough that I couldn't remember what it looked like.

Do you have a general attack plan when you're on a new website? If you are crushed for time like me, sometimes having a certain way to find and choose your favorite items can be very beneficial. Here's how I shop at new sites to get the maximum effect from the very best pieces:

Sparopffgren

1. Scan the top banners and tags for quick links. Sometimes "Women" isn't always the best link to choose, and instead you can go straight to the links like New Arrivals or Top Spring Picks, for example. On eModa, I chose thge "Just 4 Me" section, which includes a super-cute line of t-shirts like this Just 4 Me Robin Evening Shirt, which is my top pick for this section and has a highly creative look.

Salvagstudchc

2. Check out the main page modeling pics and selections. It's an easy way to check out top pieces and new selections without searching. Having everything laid out for you on the first page is beneficial for each and every merchant, so you will most likely find just what you need-- or at least a hint-- since every shop wants to attract your attention as soon as possible to keep you from moving on. I suggest scrolling down to the very bottom of the page to find features like the Look Book to find pre-styled looks to inspire you and make shopping so much easier. I was drawn to this Rocker Top from Salvage Mind as well.

Youwhiteruffdr

3. Head straight to the sale. Looking for a bargain? Head straight to the Sale rack and don't look back! Instead of tempting yourself with full-priced fashions, get the most from your sale rack from a quick glance and price comparison. Make use of the "Sort By Price" function over at eModa. My most exciting deal? This Y.O.U. Skeleton Print Dress is currently marked down to 50% off.

Diamontrue

4. Hunt for special features. Each site has an interesting new feature, and eModa has a great Denim Bar function that highlights celebrity style and cool new jeans brands. I was drawn to this pair of True Religion Sydney Jeans in Mo Fo, which have a shapely back and stitching in bright orange.

Great Low-Cost Accessories: When to Spend, When to Save

I'm always in the mood for a deal, but I know you have to pick and choose where to save and where to, well, not. After a LOT of great savings, and just about as many ones that probably should've gone differently, I've become a professional deal hunter! ;) So when you get to the "Scrimp... or Save" problem, you can always check out my list.

Prodimagems_2
(Rita Rainieri Clear Faceted Oval Earrings)

Spend or Save?
Earrings-- Spend

Don't spend money on low quality earrings. Even if you don't have any metal allergies or sensitive skin, higher quality earrings will last a lifetime, and cheap ones won't even last the season. Plus, your ears can easily become red and irritated with cheaper pairs. Unless you must have a trendy set to wear with a specific outfit, save up and buy just one classic pair a year in sterling silver, 18K gold, or hypoallergenic metal.

4794569801
(Stones and Bead Necklaces)

Spend or Save?
Necklaces-- Save

You can find plenty of great necklaces for little-- just look for semiprecious stones and multiple-strands of beads to prove it! Simple and inexpensive rose quartz or frosted glass can look far more expensive than their true cost. Get a bracelet to match if you can.

Prodimagems
(BCBG Girls Pumps, 40% Off)

Spend or Save?
Shoes-- BOTH!

Shoes pound the pavement and can face the elements, so sometimes expensive ones aren't practical. If you live in a climate with adverse weather, salt can affect your shoes even further. However, the cheapest shoes may not be the best buy, either, as the heels may bend under your weight when you're mid-commute.

Look for heels from reliable brands on sale for the best value, and always bring a second pair of shoes for your commute.

Zeunr2000812208_prod_medium
(Jennifer Zeuner Love Cutout Ring)

Spend or Save?
Rings-- Spend

You should splash out when you want to buy a ring. Since they usually stay on your finger during handwashing during the day and are often the first thing to be noticed, accessory-wise, you'll be best off with the highest quality you can afford. Plus, who wants a ring that dyes her finger black or green?

Image1xl

(Skinny Floral Scarf)

Spend or Save?
Scarves-- Save

Save money when it comes to scarves-- you'll be happy with what you find. Instead of focusing on the fabric itself, concentrate on the pattern that's trendy this season, such as animal prints or bold florals. No one will notice your brand of choice, and you'll still be completely in style.

This Week's Fashion Goal: Stocking Up on Dressy Tops

In my opinion, you can never have enough dressy tops. You need ones for those nights when you go all-out, you need ones for the times when you need to dress up but you need to be comfortable, and of course you need tops for hanging out with the girls, when there are no guys around and you can dress comfortably.

I've been taking a peek around at affordable tops, and I landed at Charlotte Russe. I've breezed by a million times at the mall, but it's usually packed, and I love to shop quietly to hunt out the bargains. So I headed out to Charlotte Russe online to see what I could find, and I've listed my top picks for you.

Pchic14264383t220x350

Sheer Top: Bow details at the neck are right on trend. Since shirting can be harder to pull off with fancy details at the neck, the sheer details make for a more forgiving overall effect.

Bubble Top in Grey

Bubble Top in Grey: Sick of all your a-tops in multi colors? This spaghetti-strapped top is just gorgeous, and its creative, new lines are just what you need to rev up your look. I can imagine this top with a cute skirt and boots, or a basic pair of jeans. It's so easy to dress up or down.

Floral Bouquet Top

Floral Bouquet Top: The ribbon strap detail on this piece is unexpected, and I love it! The bow is flirty, but a black-dominated floral has enough edge to carry the look along when you're out for drinks.

Sheer Polka Dot Top

Sheer Polka Dot Top: Can you tell that I love this look? I am such a fan of the neck bow, and the super-sweet dot details take the sweetness to a new level. Try this one with over-the-knee-boots and black skinnies to balance the cuteness level.

Sleeveless Tunic

Sleeveless Tunic: This lemony yellow tunic top is just right. Are you looking for something delicate but not bare? I vote for this top, for sure. Consider pairing this piece with a pastel scarf and long, dangly earrings.

I'm curious what you will find for yourself, so let me know. Charlotte Russe's website is very well-organized, which means that you'll be able to find exactly what you're looking for. Head straight to the dressy tops like I did, and then check out the simple casual tops afterwards if you need pieces for the gym! Have fun.

Great Dress Shapes for Spring

Jpg_11704206_blue_h_pu

1. Try Them Swingy:
Easy shapes are a cool and simple way to add comfort and style to a spring look. Embrace bodice tops that hug your midsection and flare out against your hips, like a sweet shift from bygone days.

Tip: You can modernize a look like this easily with the right current colors. This season, try unexpected pinks and a cool blue like the featured Stretch Bow Dress above by Jean Paul Galtier.

2. Get Feminine Slim Shapes: Do you feel uncomfortable when you wear slim-fitting dresses? One way to make you feel more at ease is to choose a dress with creative strap lines. Thicker straps allow for layering of shapewear or a comfy bra, so you’ll feel supported and confident when you’re out and about.

Image1xl

3. Slip on Creative New Lines:
Look for pieces that push the boundaries. Are you the type who must wear a cardigan over her dress, or needs to for work? Consider a shaped jacket this spring, possibly in a cropped style to show off that waist! You can also go for slouchier shrugs with kimono or dolman sleeves if you like that look better.

Another option is simple layering for early spring. You can slip on a long-sleeved top under your dress, or buy it already layered for ease, like this Darimeya Layered Sleeve Circle Print Dress, above, from ASOS.com.

4. Find Cool Featured Elements:
Raw silk, painted-on flowers, and drawstring halter necklines are just new ways for you to explore fresh style this spring. From softer silhouettes to the ultra-modern, you’ll see that spring is here and very fashionable indeed.

Vi_11677770_h_pu

5. Pocket It:
Dresses with pockets may be unusual, but they’re oh-so-handy. When you slip your hands into roomy pockets that are easily filled with goodies, you’ll be giving yourself a treat—one more way to lighten the load on your purse!

The Vince Painte Brush Shift Dress, features deep, wide pockets that looks right at home. You can stuff your hands into your pockets as you sashay across the parking lot-- how novel--and perhaps even avoid carrying your usual clutch purse.
