The Top Five Decorating Mistakes

Many of us feel completely out of our depth when it comes to decorating. Sure, we know a few things about it, we've all read a couple of articles on how to decorate while waiting in the dentist's office, but do we know what not to do? Sometimes, I think that knowing what not to do is almost as important as what to do. Avoiding the biggest decorating mistakes can make your efforts at decorating more successful. Which is what we all want, right? We want a house that looks pulled together, attractive and livable all at the same time.

One of the biggest mistakes that people make when it comes to decorating is to use too many patterns or colors. Most professional decorators suggest using a 60-30-10 approach when it comes to color. That is, 60% of one color, 30% of another, and 10% of the last color. As for patterns, if you use too many, it makes your room look crowded, fussy and the eye is drawn in so many directions that it makes it hard to know where to look.

On the other end of the mistake spectrum is the person who is totally afraid of color and is fearful of trying something bold or different, so they do nothing. They leave their space completely white or have it in a total monochromatic, safe tone such as a light taupe. If you want to try out some color, paint one wall. See how you like it over a period of time. If you do, go for it. Paint the whole room. Make the space your own.

A lot of people choose to forget their windows when it comes to decorating. Windows are usually one of the best features of any room. Hanging a droopy window treatment over it or simply having blinds on them defeats the purpose of windows. They are frames to bring the outdoors inside. So you need to frame them accordingly. Pick window treatments that are attractive and help to define your space.

Then there are those houses that have too many photos, knickknacks, pillows and other accessories. All this does is makes a room look overstuffed and messy. Plus, when you have a ton of photos, it tends to downplay them all because there are so many. It is better to highlight a room with a few photos, a few throw pillows, and just a couple of treasured knickknacks. A good rule is to put out a few things, and when you think it is right, take away three more.

The last decorating mistake that a lot of people make is to line up all their furniture against the walls. This is boring and tends to make a room look uninviting. It is better to place a few pieces of furniture in the middle of the room, such as a sofa with an attractive little sofa table behind it, or a wing chair with a small occasional table next to it. Take a chance with your furniture placement.

Decorating does not have to be difficult. It can be done without going to the expense of an actual interior decorator if you know a few things to stay away from.
