Practical Men's Fall Fashion

Everyone looks forward to that dramatic transition from summer to autumn—and autumn to winter. Sure, that transition lets us sip hot drinks on cold nights and spend time with friends and family in cozy places, but it also offers us the chance to break from the seasonal status quo. Like the changing color of the leaves, we can reinvent ourselves in autumn and break away from the shorts, polo shirts, and sandals look we developed for spring and summer.

Male Shoe ModelIt's easier than you think to get your male model on this season...

Most guys put on a jacket and some jeans and leave it there—probably thinking that cold-wear fashion is a woman’s game. Yes, women get more options than men do, with coats, dresses, skirts, scarves, gloves, and more, but that doesn’t mean we can’t get creative too. Cold weather gives us layering opportunities with things like jackets, suits, vests, and sweaters. That means you can experiment with color and texture combinations. So get classy. Even if you’re going casual. Here are some wardrobe elements that can spruce up your look—and won’t end up spending most of their time hibernating in your closet.

A blazer: Rushing out the door to meet up with friends? Feeling a little boring always wearing a t-shirt and jeans? Or maybe you forgot to run your laundry, so you’re hoping to sneak the same outfit past the friends you saw yesterday (don’t worry, your secret’s safe). Grabbing a blazer instantly solves all these problems. They’re versatile i.e., they go with everything from jeans and sneakers to dress pants and brogues. They also bump up your look from haphazard casual to sophisticated casual. And if it’s a little cold out, a blazer will keep you warm without weighing you down. Check out this Black 1 Button Skinny Suit Jacket from Topman for a prime example...

You can leave the blazer open and proudly display a graphic tee like the ones from community art driven Shirt.Woot.com. Or button it up half way and display a little bit of the shirt’s color.

While you’re at it, try out a pair of slim-fit jeans like the 511s from Levi. Slim-fit is in right now (ladies are loving the Joseph Gordon-Levitt look).

A three piece suit: Going all out on a formal outfit might sound crazy at first (or crazy expensive). But spending a little extra can go a long way to optimizing your wardrobe. Think of a three piece suit as a Swiss Army knife. Along with the benefit of having formal wear ready to go (for an interview or a date in the city), you can take mix and match the vest, dress pants, and suit jacket for a range of looks ranging from the aforementioned casual jeans and t-shirt look to full-on dapper. Topman has you covered here as well. Grab this three piece charcoal slim suit for just $350, plus use the code  000110204242314 to get 10% off your order.

Top any of these styles with a nice pair of dress shoes like the Bed Stu Cosburn Oxford Shoe from Urban Outfitters and hit the town.

A Perfect Match

Lemon limeShopping for fall clothes gives you a chance to explore new looks, colors, and styles for  the season. The rustic colors of autumn give you a chance to stay cozy, warm, and fabulous while you pair together different outfits.  Here are some ways I love to pair my outfits together to achieve the perfect fall look.

Coat + Scarf: Nothing keeps you warmer than a big, comfy coat and a long, soft scarf. You can experiment with different colors, designs, and patterns to find the coat and scarf combo that best suits you. A long beige trench coat with a bold red scarf gives you a classic look with a touch of color. Or if you’re feeling more daring try it the other way around--a bright red coat with a beige scarf. And don’t be afraid to try this pairing using different patterns--the bolder the better!

Mini Skirt + Tights: Cold weather doesn’t mean you have to throw away your skirts for the season--a mini skirt with tights are the perfect way to beat the cold weather while staying flirty, girly, and cute. Pairing your mini-skirts with black or patterned tights can be a fun way to stay warm while keeping up with fall fashion. Try a brown leather mini to give your outfit the essence of autumn.

Fall into Discounts: What I love more than fall trends are ways to save money on those styles. Until October 13 you can get 15% off your entire order at Old Navy (code: ONEXTRA15). Their huge selection of coats, scarves, skirts, and tights will help get you started on finding your own perfect fall pairing!

Fall Wardrobe Essentials

JeansUnfortunately, Labor Day celebrations are now a distant memory. And while it may be time to pack up your flip-flops and tank tops, it’s also time to dive into new fall fashions! If you need some new pieces to update your closet, now is the time to shop for essentials.

Cozy Button Downs: A cozy button down blouse will take you anywhere and everywhere you want to go this fall--from lounging on the couch, to shopping at the grocery store, to the airport to catch a red eye to New York. Button down tops that are worthy of a place in your personal fall collection should be classic, but still boast a few feminine details, like subtle ruffles. Getting a new cozy shirt in a warm fall shade, such as caramel or black, will have you feeling confident and looking good.

Comfy Jeans: We all pretty much live our lives in jeans. And why shouldn’t we? They look good. They feel good.  And they can take you from the office to the bar to a New Year’s Eve party.  A comfortable, flattering pair of jeans is a must have, but there’s no need to break the bank on this most basic wardrobe staple. Levi’s offers jeans and apparel for under $40, which means that you can look like a million bucks, for much, much less this fall. So embrace the season in style and look fabulous while you thrive in the autumn chill.

Brown is the New Black

Brown leather Leather has gotten a bad rep ever since the bad boys in the 1950s claimed it as their fabric of choice. But leather can be very stylish and sleek if worn in the right ways. Replacing the usual black leather with brown can open up several new fashionable doors. It’s a smart way to wear the style without looking like you're up to no good, as the softened shade ushers in a sense of class and elegance.

Boots, Boots, Boots: Sleek leather boots are the perfect introduction to the world of brown leather. The color tones down the sharpness of the leather and creates a cool, casual style you can wear every day. And a pair of comfortable, durable brown leather boots will work with almost anything in your fall wardrobe, from skirts, to suits, to jeans.

Bags, Bags, Bags: Leather messenger bags used to only be a part of business attire, but rusty brown leather bags are making a comeback on the fashion front. Roots carries a huge collection of leather bags, and until August 29 you can get $25 off your purchase of $100 or more. You only have a few days left, so check it out while you can!

Flirty Skirty: If you feel like trying something fun and flirty, look for a cute brown leather skirt to give your outfit an exotic flare. Wearing a brown leather skirt will make you feel warm, fashionable, and fabulous, but be careful not to go overboard with the look. If you're going for the leather skirt, don't pair it with a leather bag or leather boots. Remember, less is more when it comes to leather!

Blazer Days

Model shot

There is a kind of magic in blazers. They can dress up your outfit, make causal blouses professional, keep you warm, and flatter your figure. Blazers and suit jackets have been making a big splash on the style scene, so if you’re still trapped in the world of cardigans then it’s time to find the right blazer for your body and lifestyle.

Body Type: Before thinking about what will go with the clothes you already have, which is important, think about what looks good on you. You’ve probably heard fashion gurus say that a cinched waist is the most important thing for every woman’s body. And for the most part—they’re right. If you’re tall and thin, petite, or have an hourglass shape, then cinching your waist with a belt or scarf will work wonders. But if you want to hide a tummy, go for a blazer that flares outward at the waist or falls straight to give yourself a new silhouette.

Reuse and Recycle: Use blazers to recycle your everyday looks from the summer. You’ll be able to continue wearing that flowing chiffon tank you fell in love with in July well into the fall and possibly winter. And the feminine look of the tank creates a nice contrast to the structured fitted look of the blazer.

Mix and Match: If you’re not sure how to really work a blazer outside of the office, here are some tips. Darker color blazers will dress up your outfit. Even ripped jeans take on an air of “chicness” when paired with a fitted black blazer. For weekends and causal environments, a lightweight, solid pastel blazer will keep you comfortable and looking clean. Blazers with prints and textures are perfect for events because they make you look friendly and welcoming. And you don’t have to max out your credit cards to maximize the magic of blazers. Banana Republic has a fantastic collection of  blazers to choose from, and until August 20 you can get 25% off orders over $100 and free shipping on orders over $50 (code: BR25OFF).

Shoes Glorious Shoes!

Boot shoes

Fall will be here soon, bringing with it festive holidays, cozy sweaters, and a new excuse to go shoe shopping!

This season is all about classic shapes and colors, (think the traditional black suede pump) but with a few funky patterns thrown in, like leopard. And the Mad Men look (a.k.a looks from the early 1960s) will be in full swing—but, of course, with a modern twist.

There are so many styles and colors to choose from this fall, and the most efficient way to handle your shoe shopping needs is to have just about every color and style at your disposal. How else can you make an informed shoe buying decision? And the best way to have access to it all is to get access to Shoebuy.com. The site offers styles for men, women, and kids, so you can buy back-to-school shoes for the kids, while simultaneously picking up a few choice pairs for yourself. And until August 20 (you only have three more days!) you can get 20% off all orders (code: SCHOOL).

The season is just waiting for you to grab it by the stiletto heel. Take advantage of the savings and get a head start on looking great this fall.

New Shoes!

Shoe shopping

Believe it or not, it’s time to start thinking about fall trends and all of the fabulous looks that you can put together as the autumn chill descends upon you. And of course the most logical place for you to start is at the bottom—with a fabulous pair of shoes!

Step Back: Before you set out to buy something new, it’s critical to start with the old. Take inventory of the shoes that you already have in your closet. Everything that looks sharp and is in good condition gets to stay, and anything that’s outdated, scuffed beyond repair, or simply falling apart has to go.

Good Deals: Now that you’ve thrown out the old, it’s time to have fun purchasing the new! Check out Heels.com’s inventory of fabulous fall shoes. But don’t let the name fool you! Heels.com not only offers stilettos, pumps, and sky-high strappy sandals, but they also carry ballet flats that can see you through those mild autumn days, as well as flat boots. And if you order by August 24 you can get $20 off orders of $100 or more (code: SHOPPER20).

Know Who You Are: When you set out to go shoe shopping you’ll see a lot of classic fall styles as well as trendy looks that are new for the season. But before you whip out your credit card on any style that may have an experation date, think about who you are and your own personal sense of style. If you purchase a look that’s on-trend but that’s not really your style, it will simply take up residence in the back of your closet. And buying shoes that end up as paper weights means that you’ve wasted your hard-earned money. So shop smart this season. Know who you are, what you need, and get it all at a great price!

Autumn Slump No Longer

It’s fall! Are you ready to switch up your closets and start dressing for cold weather? We have some suggestions here to give you the perfect kick.

Angora_fedora-tile Invest in a hat or two. Hats just aren't worn enough anymore, and this is the perfect time to get back into the swing of things with a wool cloche, a knitted cap, or a simple loose and slouchy hat. If you want to stick to trendy colors, jewel tones are one of the best selections you might look into.

Select warm and woolly socks. These might not be wearable for every event, but at home, chunky knitted socks keep your tootsies wonderfully toasty. We like socks with lots of color, and you can also go with moccasin-style slippers with a leather or faux-leather sole. Scrunch them down around your ankles when you’re wearing leggings.

Deep_plaid_pin

Deep Floral Bobby Pins

Choose jewelry with fall patterns like plaid or houndstooth. There are a lot of floral pins constructed from wool plaid and houndstooth that can make quite the effect, but that’s not all. You will also be able to find plastic or resin brooches with a printed-on plaid patterns.

Get something for your best friend. It’s time to start dressing up your pup up to beat the cold, and that includes little sweaters and maybe a neckerchief or two. If you find a couple of coordinating pieces for your dog (maybe a jaunty scarf in red?), then you’ll have the perfect fashionable companion for strolls.

OTK_Socks_02-tileSock Dreams

It’s time to rethink hosiery. Sheer hose and bare legs are gone, and hosiery should take over. Over-the-knee socks are cozy and can be found in heavier weights to wear until the holidays. Heathered grey and oatmeal socks are both amazing seasonal options for the woman with a neutral-dominated wardrobe.

How do you pep up your wardrobe for fall?
